There are plenty of areas where my disdain for Bush administration policies reaches something approaching climax, but none have irked me as much as their rock-solid certainty of their "right" to throw people in jail and hold them indefinitely as part of the "War on Terror." Nothing says
police-state "America" like keeping people in legal limbo without having to explain why. Clinton admitted the law allowing a president to do that happened on his watch, but that was only in cases where revealing the suspect's identity would destroy the intelligence network.
It's good to see the Supreme Court doing its job and telling the Bushies they're not kings operating under the mandate of heaven, and that it's up to the courts to decide the balance between legal representation and national security interest.
"A state of war is not a blank check for the president when it comes to the rights of the nation's citizens," according to Sandra Day O'Connor.
I can sleep a little better.
